At Oroton, we collect inspiration from home and abroad, which inform our tightly curated collections. Here, we speak with Victoria Zschommler the photographer behind our AW20 campaign to discover what she collects and what it means to her.
What does curation mean to you?
As a photographer, the curation of work surrounds me everyday. Without the skill of curating, there’s nowhere for your eyes to be guided. Everything I do is considered and curated.
What do you collect?
It started with rocks. The most beautiful, or ugly or unusual ones I could find. I love the character each one has. Then I opened my mind to the odd shell or piece of driftwood – each piece has to say something interesting in it’s shape or colour for me to pick it up.
When did you first start collecting?
While holidaying, a couple of years ago. I had been reading a lot and was feeling extremely inspired by my surroundings. We were camping on a very remote, wild and expansive beach. Aside from some writing, there wasn’t much to do with all my ideas. Once I started discovering my finds, I couldn’t stop.
What does your collection mean to you?
It gives me a little moment of joy when I find a new rock. Because my collection is made up of natural matter, I don’t feel like it’s truly mine. There’s not a feeling of absolute permanence, if I find some new rocks that look or feel better than others in the collection, I’ll let some go.
How does collecting link to the idea of curation?
Curation plays a big part in collecting - otherwise I fear collecting could become hoarding!
Any words of wisdom on the art of collecting?
Find something that sings in your soul. Make the act of collecting a moment of mindfulness.
Does your collection tell a story?
Each rock tells the story of where it was found and each rock has a character which has been shaped by the elements and time.
