How To Wear Lace

HOW TO WEAR LACE

Staying in touch, both literally and creatively speaking, is a key takeaway this season. It’s the idea that texture and the way clothes feel on the body can help shape your mood. That’s always a focus for OROTON’s design team, however this season the obsession was further fuelled by lace – specifically modern lace in interesting shades of Garden Green and soft Foxglove pink. The intricate handwork feels like a dream.

“I like the prettiness of lace and the nod to vintage,” explains creative director Sophie Holt. “I also love how it ties in with our utility shapes, the contrast between the decorative detail and the sporting lines. It goes to the idea that we want to get dressed up again.” So how to embrace the look? Read on for a few tips from the studio:

OCTOBER 2022

1. Try Set Dressing
The design team always works to the idea that you should be able to wear two or three pieces cut from the same cloth. The designers call it ‘set dressing’, a head-to-toe outfit that comes together effortlessly in the same colour or fabric. Start by layering tone on tone – for example, the Camp Shirt in Foxglove pink, worn with the matching Short Tuck Detail Lace Skirt, a sweet tulip-shaped silhouette and the perfect Summer party look.

2. Reinvent The Rules
Lace adds a point of difference to your workday uniform, it also transforms at night, at the weekend. Take the Kaftan, a wonderful free shape, yet when done in lace it feels elevated and new. Add a belt for pulled-together polish in the office, or heels for a quick romantic update by night. It’s a cocktail dress, it’s beach chic, depending on your mood.

3. Think Lace Meets Sport
The new look lace is all about modernity. Pull the collection apart and it works beautifully when paired with utility pieces and sporting shapes, tailored pants, tomboy caps. Play up the idea by pairing a Garden green Camp shirt with a bandeau-style Bralet and A-line Skirt with pockets – game, set and match.

4. Add Architecture
Carry a large, structured Tote Bag in the same lace treatment. We love the layered element here, and the bag’s architectural shape will anchor the prettiness of lace and serve as a (practical and roomy) talking point.

5. Finish With Jewels
Whether you choose discreet gold hoop earrings or a bold statement necklace, think of jewellery as an essential finishing touch and another way to add personality – it ups the feelgood factor, too.
