HOW AN OROTON BUYER BUYS FOR HERSELF

How does OROTON’s Alexandria Park find inspiration right now? Through extensive colour exploration – both in her wardrobe and on canvas. Park’s abstract paintings mirror her very considered approach to getting dressed: build on a palette of less-than-predictable neutrals and add a twist. Here, our Sydney-based Buyer shares a few styling solutions for the season ahead.

Tell us about your love of colour and how that influences your work as a Buyer at OROTON:

This has been the year to try to adapt and change and be creative in the moment. Working from home has meant preparing for Zoom meetings and conference calls, time management has become crucial. Painting in my spare time has always been one of my joys, I like to experiment with palettes and texture, and I think it has given me quite a good understanding of colour and how it impacts your mood. For instance, I love exploring neutrals – new neutrals, like the tones pictured here. The green of this coated trench is so divine, it’s a beautiful fashion piece and makes such a statement, and yet you can easily pair it back with so many things in your wardrobe. The Lilia crossbody bag is another favourite, it’s fun and versatile. You can pop all your essentials in here and it looks so interesting and chic.

When it comes to your role at OROTON, how do you navigate each new collection from the shopper’s perspective:

I think it always goes back to colour, considering how each piece mixes and matches with the next. In my mind, the ranges are very sophisticated, everything feels fresh and new but in a classic way, there’s an ease to the clothing that is just so desirable. There are beautiful fashion pieces in the line-up that you definitely want in your wardrobe, if not just for the amazing quality, and then there are incredible basics, the essentials. Everything is so versatile and wearable.

So how then does a Buyer buy for herself? Can you share a few secrets as to what you’re personally looking to invest in?

I’m always on the hunt for pieces that are transeasonal and classic, such as an amazing suit, and then typically I’ll also invest in a beautiful statement piece, something that stands out. I love this asymmetrical top’s sculptural shape, it’s such an elegant look that you can dress up with trousers or make it feel more casual by pairing it with jeans and sandals by day. Tone-on-tone layering is also impactful. I have a lot of fun playing with dress codes throughout the season, and mixing up my wardrobe.

Sculptural shapes obviously inform your aesthetic, can you describe how they play a part in accessorising your look:

I love gold jewellery, it is my everyday go-to. This particular necklace is quite delicate and fine but it just elevates a simple top, it’s a beautiful finishing touch. And I love everything about this architectural Klara bag – it’s roomy and therefore so practical, I love its contrast stitching and its innovative shape is such a point of difference. They’re the kind of pieces that stamp any look

Lastly, can you single out a great confidence-building outfit that you have recently added to your wardrobe?

It would have to be the belted cotton-linen blazer and matching trousers in Lemon Curd. This suit is quite relaxed even though it’s a little mannish in its tailoring, and the make is perfection. I think its belted silhouette and colour is key, it’s such a fresh look. Whenever I wear these pieces they feel so good because they’re structured yet light, feminine and timeless.
