Redefining the Work Uniform: Why Dressing Up for your Remote Workday Matters

How do we define workday style that’s right for now? With confidence, polish and comfort in mind. But while that might seem like a simple formula, we know there are complexities to the rule: for instance, can knitwear ever be as elegant as it is cosy, can your clothing be too casual, and just how exactly do you zero in on the perfect pair of pants or go-to shirt? Here, our easy guide to building a versatile working-week uniform (whether you’re in the office or remote).

THE BUTTON UP SHIRT

Start with a button up shirt: Research shows that nearly half the Australian population has re-strategised its week in order to work from home, WFH may very well be here to stay. That’s not to say our daily schedules have eased, so to eliminate a little wardrobe anxiety in the mornings we’re advocating for a chic and interesting button up shirt.

For an of-the-moment Springtime clothing option, try our White Lace Shirt – lacework is something our design team has been loving, an artisanal touch that combines the nostalgia of cotton lace with the crispness and modernity of pure poplin. Our style also features a play on masculine-feminine touches: bib detailing, man-style cuffs and natural shell buttons. Dial up the elegance by wearing your shirt tucked neatly into tailored pants and finished with gold jewels, or wear it unbuttoned as an overshirt for a more modern look.

Secondly, our OROTON overshirt in pure linen, the fabric gives shape and body but also a certain kind of ease, a casual softness. This classic piece can be worn as an overshirt or neatly buttoned through, and we love to create a voluminous billowing sleeve by pushing up the cuff – it’s the perfect non-basic basic to build on.

For those working late, our new-in long-sleeve gold button shirt, tailored in crisp cotton poplin, is the perfect day-to-night option. Its design gives a subtle nod to military uniforms, the reference softened by a pleated neckline. Button the collar at the neck for a sharper and more ‘pulled-together’ look or style a shorter sleeve using the shirt’s tab and button detail.

TRY A POLISHED KNIT

Slip into comfortable knitwear: Who knew that a knit cardigan could be such a chic and sophisticated workday proposition? It’s all in the belt. Our chic relaxed knit, crafted from 100% woollen Italian yarn, has been styled with a soft bow giving it a waisted silhouette. For a casual option, remove the belt for more of a boxy, loose feel.

Think of luxe knitwear as your mid-week go-to, the perfect sportswear-meets-utility option. OROTON’s Rib Collar Knit; made in soft Italian yarn, sourced from Australian and New Zealand wool, this casual look features a half-zip allowing for an open V-neck or chic high collar. The relaxed fit cinches at the waist and wrists with a rib-trim basque and we love its lounging feel, its modern wear-anywhere versatility.

THE TAILORED PANT

Tailoring and expert fit is key: Over the past year, our design team has been pushing the idea that a pair of relaxed linen trousers wins out over loungewear as a solid WFH basic. And more recently, we heard from Sara Crampton, the founder of The Undone, that our pants are one of her favourites: “These pants are classic, they have a nice high waist with a relaxed leg, exactly the kind of shape I gravitate towards. And they feel so good.” Indeed, this particular style is crafted in a heavy-weave pure linen, tailored with a relaxed waistband, wide leg, front pockets – and to echo Crampton’s words they do feel good.

PLEAT FRONT PANT

When we talk about new neutrals, more often than not we’re thinking about new ways to incorporate clever colour into your wardrobe, the kind of colour that works with everything from one season to the next. This pleat-front pant is the perfect example – a rich Cognac shade made in a luxe Italian viscose-cotton fabric. Our pants are tailored with flattering leg pleats and a high-waist silhouette.

Searching for casual pants that feel super relaxed but look sleek, sporty and designed? Search up our Ponte Pant tailored for a soft stretch style in our ingenious firmly woven Japanese fabric made of 100% cotton. These pants incorporate front pockets and an elasticated waist for maximum comfort, but the refined shaping elevates them above and beyond loungewear.

THE FINISHING TOUCH

Add a finishing touch: Waist-up dressing requires interesting accents. With optimism in mind we’re focusing on jewellery and those small indulgent touches that not only add an element of polish to your look but also say something about your personal style. The OROTON Blakely Double Hoops consist of an abstract design which lends your outfit a strong point of difference.

Our Evie Bracelet is a heavyweight chain and classic padlock which makes an unmissable statement. This piece elevates the most basic classics in your wardrobe and stamps your look with an extra element of cool.
